Optimization-based methods for resource allocation in traffic and transport systems

I am currently working as an Associate Professor in Computer Science with an emphasize on teaching in courses on topics such as leadership and ethics as well as supply chain management and operations research.

I have for more than 20 years worked with research on optimization-based decision-support for the transport and traffic domain (see below), and I recently decided to deepen my interest in questions on policies and ethical frameworks for introducing and using automated decision support systems for critical functions and systems in the society, such as public transport networks, rail networks and health care.

Background and previous research

I have a MSc. in Engineering with specialization on Transport and Communication systems from Linköping University (2001). My degree was concluded with a thesis project focusing on a simulation study (using Arena software) and a production flow analysis of a large factory producing high voltage cables.

During the time 2001-2006, I was emplyed as a PhD student at BTH and focused on research on optimization-based methods for real-time train delay management in cooperation with and funded by the Swedish Rail Administration. That research was continued for several years in projects such as FLOAT and BLIXTEN as well as the EU project FR8Rail2 (see deliverable 3.2).. The research has also been extended to cover challenges of managing public transport networks, e.g. in the project TRANS-FORM .

I am one of the founders of the national research programme KAJT and I was on the board of KAJT 2013-2022. In October 2022 I decided to hand-over the responsibility of BTHs involvement in KAJT to a fellow colleague, as part of my decision to deepen my knowledge in applied ethics.

During the years 2008-2015 I worked both at BTH and Linköping University (LiU). During those years I helped to build up a strong research environment in the railway domain at LiU and I was also the deputy coordinator of the Swedish research school in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).
